Gold Rush

Doom Creek was part of the gold fields of Canvastown. Back in 1864 Canvastown was booming when the gold rush saw lots of gold miners setting up their canvas tents in the area. Despite its name, Doom Creek was actually very rich in gold, but it was the immense boulders that made Doom Creek difficult to mine. These days it is exactly these boulders that make Doom Creek great for canyoning. What an opportunity to leap of rocks into a creek in which occasionally gold is still found. But that is not the only rush you will get on this day. As part of this combo, you will also get to soar on one of the world’s longest flying fox at a speed of up to 100 km/hr. You will fly high above the scenic forest canopy whilst taking in views of Cable and Delware Bay, the Western Ranges, and D’urville Island. What is not to love?

About the canyon

An easy 45-minute walk will take you to the start of Doom Creek. The guides will give you a thorough safety briefing focused on jumping and floating through rapids. Then it is time to venture into Doom Creek, a beautiful slot canyon with a few small jumps to get you going. At the end of this slot, Doom Creek joins up with the mighty Wakamarina River which is a lot wider. The vertical walls make for great jumps, some well over 10m high. You decide how high you want to climb, to then turn around and launch yourself into crystal clear pools. About 3 hours’ worth of walking, wading, swimming and jumping takes us straight back to the car park. You will absolutely love this trip if you are into jumps and swimming.

About the skywire

Your tour starts with a 4km ride in one of our 4-wheel drive vehicles, passing through pristine native forest while our guides entertain you with facts about the park’s diverse native environment, cultural aspects and fun stories. The Skywire is set 300m above our base café and has incredible views of Cable and Delaware Bays, the western ranges and north towards D’urville Island. On a clear day you can even see the snow-capped peak of Mount Taranaki. You will be strapped securely into the ride with a 5-point harness. The Skywire seats up to four “flyers” at a time. You will experience around 1000m of gravity assisted free-wheeling, reaching speeds of up to 100 km/hr, followed by 600m at a more leisurely pace – ideal for taking in the incredible scenery. Then you do it all again, but backwards, finishing back at the start after nearly 10 minutes of thrilling adventure.

“Best day ever!!”

Tripadvisor review

My boyfriend and I did the Torrent River Canyon tour as part of the Source to Sea package (you canyon the first day and kayak the next day). We had an amazing time, probably the best thing we’ve done since arriving in New Zealand five months ago. Riki and Diana were fantastic guides. They were positive, energetic, professional and obviously LOVE what they are doing. This tour is worth every single penny. You get lunch, snacks, juice and a hot beverage along the way. We abseiled, zip lined, swam, cliff jumped…it was amazing!! it is a must do if you only have one or two days in the area. The hostel boat in Anchorage Bay was pretty cool. We were not expecting to be in such tight quarters, but we adapted. The dinner on the boat was great, very filling and there is time to enjoy the beach after canyoning and in the morning before you head to kayaking. The next morning you hike about 40 minutes to Watering Cove, and wait for the kayak guides to come meet you. Lunch is fantastic and the kayak is absolutely beautiful. It was very relaxing after such an intense day beforehand. We saw heaps of fur seals on Adele Island, including little baby ones! Our guide also told us some pretty interesting stories about the area.

HIGHLY recommend this. I would do this again in a heartbeat if I could!!
